Professor Aaron Thomas, MFA
Veteran | Educator | Visual Communicator | Mental Health Advocate
Professor Aaron Thomas is a distinguished educator, master photographer, and documentarian whose life?s work is dedicated to visual storytelling, education, and spiritual growth. Raised in Little Rock, Arkansas, as the son of a career Army soldier, he developed an early interest in electronics and self-taught engineering skills before enlisting in the U.S. Navy at 18. During his service aboard the USS John F. Kennedy, he traveled to 33 countries, an experience that shaped his global perspective and passion for storytelling.
Following his military service, Professor Thomas pursued diverse career paths, earning a locomotive engineer license before launching a 30-year entrepreneurial journey in information technology. However, after the 2008 recession led to financial collapse, he embarked on a transformative educational journey, overcoming the challenges of being a high school dropout for nearly four decades. With the unwavering support of his wife and four wonderful daughters, and a deep reliance on his faith, he returned to academia, earning multiple degrees, including a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography, a Minor in Radio and Television Broadcasting, and an MFA in Documentary Production & Film Studies.
As an advocate for veterans diagnosed with PTSD, Professor Thomas founded Photographically Touching Souls Deeply, a nonprofit organization that empowers disabled veterans through photography and visual arts therapy. His commitment to service extends to his role as a Texas Certified Mental Health Peer Specialist, where he volunteers with MHMR, ViaHope, Dallas Vet Center, and Texas School Charities.
Currently an instructor at the University of North Texas and Dallas College, Professor Thomas
integrates his wealth of experience into his teaching, inspiring students to see beyond the lens and capture the essence of the human condition. His ongoing work includes his soon-to-be-released, The Spirit Speaks Podcast, his manuscript An Encountered Moment, and his innovative educational programs such as the Vetrapreneur Master Class and Veteran Photography I & II.
Guided by his personal mission statement??I aim for my contribution to always be greater than my reward?? Professor Thomas lives by the principle that true success is measured by service, impact, and the lives he touches. With every frame he captures and every lesson he teaches, he continues his mission: to educate, inspire, and touch souls deeply.
